‘Baba Yaga as a Girl’

2024, porcelain, glaze, silver lustre, epoxy resin

20cm x 16cm x 14cm

What happened to Baba Yaga in her youth to make her the witch she became?  And why is menopausal woman portrayed as such? As women mature in our society and the oestrogen drains from their bodies, their value dimimishes and we make them invisible, make them wrong. Is it because they become dangerous? As their power returns and the veil of aquiescence slips.

In her youth her wildness is her gift yet we burden her with the expectation of containment, civility and thousands of hours un-paid labour, abuse and inequality.  ‘Baba Yaga as a Girl’ contemplates the Archetypal dichotomy of maiden and crone and how they are fetishised in our society.
